So john met joan rollason…. at a typical  aussie party in Earls Court and the rest is history. ( They met up twice at the party ).From the photo above around 1955 it looks like John was still living in Norwich ( working for burroughs )when he met our mum. Mum would have been working in London as a nurse. Dad says she was working at St. Mary’s Hospital , London.

(A sideline: Joan had arrived in London August 1954 on the Himalaya 🙂

Mary , Joan’s sister came over to London to host the wedding in place of Joan’s parents.

Joan’s rich uncle Geoff Rollason came from the US to give Joan away.  His Uncle Harold Stubbs represented John’s family.

Dad tells us that they went to the cities in Holland mostly on their honeymoon, and I am sure we shall find some pics sometime soon. Dad bought a 1956 ford anglia for the journey and it took him 12 months to pay it off. After they returned, they moved to Chingford. ( Mum had been living in the Earls Court area). The address of the upstairs rental flat was : 4 Hardford Close in Chingford, a cul de sac –  near Epping forest . At that time dad was working for Burroughs at the east end of london and so it was a more convenient location. Mum and dad lived there until July 1957.

During this time, Mum and dad made many trips to Europe whilst Dad continued to work for Burroughs, and we assume that Mum also continued to work.

This flat  where mum was living in 1955 is near the Boltons which explains the choice of church for the wedding. According to dad she shared with three or four girls , and because it was such a good location they had to have a doctor on the ticket in order to get the place. That would mean leaving out the doctor’s shoes or having him stay a night or two to keep up appearances! According to Joan’s cheque book, her landlord was E.H. J. Brooks. ( Whilst in 1954 she may have been living somewhere else, as there is a note of a different landlord, Mr. Hollans).

The ship , built in the 1930’s was converted to a single class ship in 1954. It was the first passenger ship through the Suez Canal in late 1957 after the canal was closed in 1956.The ship was one of the “white sisters” as the hull was painted white and originally the funnels were yellow. The ship in WW2 carried australian troops to Egypt and in its days it was also a mail ship carrying post from england and India to australia. At the time of mum and dad’s journey she was a passenger ship for 1250 tourist class passengers which at this time omitted India on its journey to Australia. The ship was sold for scrap in 1962.

Ten Pound Pom: An Assisted migration scheme allowed mum and dad to migrate back to Australia  for ten pounds each? As part of the white australia policy.  If it was not for that the trip would have cost a fair deal , around 120 pounds.

Mum and dad would have arrived about Sept / October 1957 in Australia. ( Doing the math, it is quite possible that I , Jen was conceived either on the Strathnaver given my birth date of june 1958 or just when Mum and Dad got back).

The arrival :

According to records, in 1958 Mum and dad lived in a flat at 17 Beaconsfield, Highgate Hill, Brisbane .

After Jen was born, 17th June 1958,  Joan and John moved to Clausen Street Mt. Gravatt, Brisbane around the end of 1958.( I believe it may have been 1 Clausen street, but I cannot be sure).

The photo looks like Highgate Hill. Beaconsfield was just around the corner from his father’s place at 31 Dornoch Terrace. I have to ask dad, but I suspect the christening was at St. Andrew’s , South Brisbane. It seems that many were married or baptised there.

Philip was born in 1961 whilst mum and dad were living at Mt. Gravatt. It looks like the claim to fame for Mt Gravatt was the opening of the “Big Top” drive in shopping centre in 1960 at the corner of Logan and Nursery Roads – very close to where mum and dad lived.

I am trying to find out which beach houses we stayed in. I know by 1970 we were staying at Mermaid Beach , then by 1972 , Tugun on the Gold Coast. Matt has taken a photo of montana road Mermaid Beach ( year we stayed?)and I do remember staying at at least one beach front house around main or mermaid beach. We shall try to find out the chronology.

By 1963 the family had moved from Mt. Gravatt to a rented house in Graceville. By early 1964 the house at Indooroopilly was bought.
